FAQs
Do you accept insurance?
No. While I worked with insurance for years, it has become too restrictive in a way that does not allow me to treat patients holistically. Insurance companies paid less for skilled hands-on care and often decided the goal my patients had were not “medically necessary” therefore refusing to pay for therapy. Many insurance companies would also not pay for “chronic” conditions. The amount of time and energy spent on insurance requirements was starting to impact the care and increased the support staff needed to follow up on the requirements and track down payments. The increased costs of support staff with the decrease in insurance reimbursement rates made it unsustainable to maintain 1:1 care with a therapist and increased the need to use an aide, which is an unlicensed person that is trained and supervised by the therapist. While it is possible to still provide quality care under this model, it is difficult, it took longer for my patients to get better and patients often ultimately ended up seeing me on a cash pay basis due to the restrictions.
I live in ____. Can I still see Dr. Jen via Telehealth?
Dr. Nelson is licensed in MN, IL, and AZ and happy to provide physical therapy services if you are in one of these three states. If you are outside of this area we will need to check the current practice act in your state, but coaching and consults with your medical provider may still be an option. Telehealth has changed drastically due to the pandemic, and some states do not require a license for a therapist to provide telehealth sessions. Telehealth has been in a constant state of change so please contact Dr. Jen to find out what the best option is.
What is the difference between physical therapy, coaching and a consult?
There are a lot of overlaps in these services so it can get confusing! Physical therapy is to help treat a specific medical condition. It will often include coaching and consults, but the focus is to treat a medical condition for which the therapist will give you her advice as a medical expert. Coaching is more general and is focused on goals instead of the treatment of a particular condition. A coach will not offer you advice but rather help you explore your options. Exercises given by a coach are less specific. Consults with your medical providers can be a great way to get hands-on care with a local provider and the advice from Dr. Jen. Read more about Services or contact Dr. Nelson to figure out what the best option is for you.
Do I need a referral for treatment?
Usually, no. You do not need a referral for coaching, yoga or a consult in any state. For Physical Therapy it will depend on the state you are in. You do not need a referral if you are in MN, AZ or IL.
How much do Services Cost?
Please see detailed pricing under Services.
What equipment do I need for a video session?
A good internet connection and electronic device with a webcam such as a tablet, laptop or phone will work. Something to hold and angle a phone/tablet/webcam is helpful but not necessary. Wireless headphones are helpful when you are moving around and away from your device so I can clearly hear you, but it is not necessary. Comfortable clothes that are easy to move in are a good choice. To help me see how things are moving it can be helpful to have clothes that expose the area we are working on such as shorts or a tank top. We will discuss workout equipment and other apps during the session, but try and keep anything you have (bands, weights, foam roller…) at home close at hand so we can use it if needed. But please do not worry about purchasing any equipment until we have discussed it. Finally, please make sure to have any intake and consent forms done at least 24 hours before your session and sent to Dr. Nelson. These are the first part of your evaluation and need to be done before we can start our session. If there is any missing information, it will delay your evaluation as we pause to fill it in. If this is a long-standing problem and you have seen numerous providers, it can be helpful to have a written timeline of events/traumas, how/when your symptoms changed, providers you have seen and the diagnosis given, treatment you have received and how you responded to it.
What should I bring to my first in-person session?
Come in comfortable clothes that expose the area of concern. If you want to look at running and jumping, it is also good to bring shoes you can work out in, but we can look at this at a different time if you forget. Please make sure to have any intake and consent forms done at least 24 hours before your session and sent to Dr. Nelson. These are the first part of your evaluation and need to be done before we can start our session, and if there is any missing information we will spend our session filling it in before moving on to the rest of the evaluation. If this is a long-standing problem and you have seen numerous providers, it can be helpful to have a written timeline of events/traumas, how/when your symptoms changed, providers you have seen and the diagnosis given, treatment you have received and how you responded to it.
Can I submit the bill to my insurance?
Yes, if you are being seen for Physical Therapy. I will provide you with a Superbill once a month so you can request reimbursement.
What form of payment do you accept?
Currently I accept credit/debit/HSA card, cash or gift card. A credit card will be taken at booking which can be charged or changed as needed. You will have access to your notes and bills/receipts in your portal. After each session I will charge your account and you will be emailed your superbill/receipt. All the information you need to submit a claim to your insurance will be on the superbill/receipt.
